Felony Fraud: Espar Parking Heater Price-Fixing
A parking heater is a device which may be used to heat the cabin or engine of a truck. Because parking heaters are battery operated, drivers can save fuel by using them to heat their trucks without leaving the engine on idle.
The U.S. Department of Justice announced in March 2015 that Espar Inc., a company that makes parking heaters, is guilty of felony conspiracy to set parking heater prices between October 1, 2007 and December 31, 2012. In short, Espar and co-conspirators defrauded consumers by setting a price floor for parking heaters and by coordinating price increases.
These acts are in violation of the Sherman Anti-Trust Act, which could carry a maximum fine of $100 million. The Sherman Act was put in place in the 1890s to prevent monopolies and restrict competition. According to Reuters, the hearing to determine the fine paid by Espar will be held in June.
